Notion AI Credits Are Live: What Happens When They Run Out

Since Nov 2, every Notion Business and Enterprise workspace runs on monthly AI credits. Overflow is off by default, so AI work stops when a member's allowance runs out. Here is how far the credits go and what owners should set.

As of Nov 2, 2026, every existing Notion Business and Enterprise workspace runs on Notion's new AI credit system. New workspaces of those types moved on Oct 19. Each member now gets a fixed monthly allowance, and when it runs out, Notion's own help center says "impacted work will pause until your credits reset."

That last part is the real change. The seat price did not move, but AI use on Business is no longer open-ended. If you run a team on Notion, there is one setting to check today, and a few habits worth changing before AI Meeting Notes starts drawing on the same allowance on Dec 1.

What changed on Nov 2

Notion split AI usage into three kinds of credit. Two come with every Business or Enterprise seat; the third is a paid workspace balance.

  • Standard credits: 1,500 per member a month, no rollover. They pay for work where Notion picks the model (Auto), plus AI blocks, writing, translation and AI formulas.
  • Select credits: 500 per member a month, no rollover. They pay for work where you pick a model yourself, and for Custom Agents you set up for your own use.
  • Notion credits: none included. A paid workspace balance at $10 per 1,000 that covers overflow (if an owner allows it), high-consumption models, workspace-funded Custom Agents and agents run through the Notion API.

Notion says your included amount "may vary depending on your plan and purchase arrangement," so check the real numbers in Settings → Notion AI → Usage before you plan around them.

The two included pools are strict. You cannot combine them, trade one for the other, or move them between members. A teammate with 400 unused Select credits cannot run a single Standard task with them.

The setting to check today

When a member runs out of Standard or Select credits, Notion can let them keep going by spending the workspace's paid Notion credits. Notion's FAQ is direct about the default: this is off by default. Owners turn it on in Settings → Notion AI.

So the out-of-the-box behaviour is a hard stop, not a surprise bill. That is a reasonable choice for cost control, but it can bite a team that relies on an agent for daily work. Decide which you want:

  • Leave it off if predictable cost matters more than uninterrupted AI. Members will see alerts in Notion Agent chat as they get close to the limit.
  • Turn it on with limits if AI is part of how work gets done. The new Credits tab lets owners set default or custom limits per member, group and agent, so one heavy user cannot drain the balance.

The old Notion credits page in settings was retired on Nov 2; credit management now lives in the Credits tab under Notion AI settings.

How far 1,500 credits actually go

Notion publishes estimates for common tasks, comparing its Auto router with picking Opus 5.5 yourself. We turned them into a monthly budget for one member, using 1,500 Standard credits for Auto and 500 Select credits for Opus 5.5:

  • Simple tasks (polish an email, translate a message): 5 credits on Auto vs 50 on Opus 5.5. That is about 300 a month on Auto, or about 10 on Opus 5.5.
  • Medium tasks (write a work report, triage support): 10 credits on Auto vs 85 on Opus 5.5. About 150 a month on Auto, or about 5 on Opus 5.5.
  • Complex tasks (draft a performance review, refine a quarterly plan): 25 credits on Auto vs 150 on Opus 5.5. About 60 a month on Auto, or about 3 on Opus 5.5.

The pattern is clear. On Auto, a normal member has room for a few hundred everyday tasks a month. Picking a frontier model by hand burns the 500 Select credits in a handful of complex jobs. Notion says Auto can make credits go "up to 10 times further," and its own table backs that up.

What it costs in dollars

The only credit price Notion publishes is $10 per 1,000 Notion credits. Notion is clear that included Standard and Select credits "aren't cash," but valuing them at that rate gives a useful yardstick: 2,000 included credits are worth roughly $20 a month, about the same as the Business seat itself ($20 per member per month on Notion's US pricing page).

In other words, the AI allowance is most of what you are buying when you move from Plus to Business. We saw the same shift when Figma's agent left beta and started billing: SaaS tools are turning AI from a free extra into a metered line item tied to the seat.

Watch Dec 1: meeting notes start counting

AI Meeting Notes uses Auto, and from Dec 1, 2026 it will draw on each member's Standard credits. Notion estimates about 10 Standard credits for a one-hour meeting.

That sounds small, but it adds up for meeting-heavy roles. A manager with 20 hours of recorded meetings a month would spend around 200 credits, or roughly 13% of their Standard allowance, before writing a single prompt.

What to do this week

  1. Open Settings → Notion AI → Usage and confirm each plan's real allowance.
  2. Decide whether overflow to Notion credits stays off, or turn it on with per-member limits.
  3. Tell your team to leave Notion Agent on Auto unless a task truly needs a specific model.
  4. Move shared, always-on Custom Agents to workspace funding so they do not drain one person's Select credits.
  5. Check meeting-heavy members' usage before Dec 1.

If you are comparing Notion's AI with standalone assistants, our AI tools comparison for 2026 covers ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini plans side by side. And for teams moving agents into shared workspaces, Atlassian's approach to agents in the same loop is a useful contrast.

Verdict

Notion's new credits are generous for normal use on Auto and tight for anyone who hand-picks frontier models. The pricing is not the problem; the default is. With overflow off, a busy member's AI simply stops mid-month. Owners should make that choice on purpose today rather than find out from a stalled agent, and plan for meeting notes joining the meter on Dec 1.

Frequently asked questions

How many AI credits do Notion Business members get?
Each Business or Enterprise member gets 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits a month, according to Notion's help center (amounts can vary by plan and contract). Standard credits cover work on Auto; Select credits cover work where you pick a model or run a personal Custom Agent. Neither rolls over or can be shared.
What happens when Notion AI credits run out?
Features that use the exhausted credit type pause until the monthly reset. A workspace owner can let members continue using paid Notion credits, but that setting is off by default and is turned on in Settings → Notion AI.
How much do extra Notion credits cost?
Notion lists Notion credits at $10 per 1,000. They pay for overflow beyond the included allowances, high-consumption models and Custom Agents funded by the workspace.
When did the Notion AI credit system start?
New Business and Enterprise workspaces moved on Oct 19, 2026, and existing workspaces moved on Nov 2, 2026. AI Meeting Notes will start using Standard credits on Dec 1, 2026, at about 10 credits per one-hour meeting.
