Claude Drops Extra Tabs
Chat, Cowork, Docs, and Slides now share one Claude. You stop picking a mode. Claude routes the job — Pro and Max first.

Anthropic just retired the mode picker.
On 16 September 2026 the company said Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. You bring a quick question or a report due at noon. Claude decides what the task needs, including after you close the laptop. The frustrating part of the old split, Anthropic wrote, was deciding where a job belonged — and watching context die when it belonged in the other tab.
That is a product confession. Cowork was the long-job surface. Chat was the conversation. Users treated both as Claude and got punished for guessing wrong. The fix is a router, not another product name.
Docs, Slides, Design in the same thread

Claude Docs and Claude Slides shipped the same day. Claude Design now runs inside conversations instead of as a side door. Ask for a document and you write it together. Ask for a deck and Claude drafts slides you can edit, present in-product, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. All three are beta on paid plans. Enterprise admins choose when they turn on. Standalone Design keeps working if you already live there.
Artifacts from Design, Slides, and Docs sit at one shareable link that opens on a phone. You can drag an element, or tell Claude to change it. Default behavior: Claude asks before it takes an action. You can flip that to keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look. Final say stays with the user, Anthropic says.
The worked example is a weekly pipeline report due at noon. You ask what moved, then: write it the way we always do, flag slips, put highlights in five slides. Claude asks if anything is unclear. You watch progress from a phone. At the desk, the doc and the deck came from the same thread, so they match. Schedule it for Mondays and Claude starts without a prompt.
Who gets it, and who waits
Rollout is Pro and Max first, across the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile, over the coming weeks. Nothing to toggle. Existing Cowork chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills stay put. Team and Free follow later. Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice before anything changes in their orgs.
That 30-day clause is the real control plane. A merged agent that can pull a legal research database, read cases, fetch more, and drop them in a folder — Anthropic quotes economist Andrew Keller doing exactly that — is a different risk object than a chat box. Scheduled runs that start without a prompt are another. Enterprises that already fight shadow SaaS just inherited a quieter one.
What this does to the agent UI
The industry spent two years adding surfaces: chat, canvas, computer use, cowork, research, voice. Each surface was a bet that users would classify their own work. They will not. They will type into the box they already have. Anthropic is conceding that and moving classification into the model.
The cost is observability. When the user picked Cowork, you knew you were in a long-running, tool-heavy session. When Claude routes silently, the session type is an inference. That is better UX and a worse audit trail unless the product shows what mode it entered, which tools it will call, and when a scheduled job last ran.
For developers wiring Claude into a stack, the merge is a hint about the API shape too. Skills, connectors, and artifacts become shared state across what used to be products. If your integration assumed Cowork was a separate container, that container is now a behavior. Watch the Help Center capability list as Pro/Max light up; that list is the contract, not the blog post.
