Anthropic is not running a charity. It is buying distribution.

On 6 October 2026, during SF Tech Week, the lab opened Claude Startups to a much wider set of founders. Approved companies get a free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats if they are new to Team, a one-time $1,000 API credit, and a partner bundle Anthropic values at up to $45,000. TechCrunch led with the Team plan and the thousand dollars. Inc counted the partner stack and called the package more than $50,000. Both numbers are real. They just describe different receipts.

Who actually qualifies

You can apply if the company was founded in the last five years or funded in the last two. Bootstrapped is fine. You need a Claude Console account, a company email that matches the site, and a short description of what you are building. Anthropic says it reviews every application. Credits expire six months after they are granted. That is the clock that matters more than the press photo.

If your VC sits in Anthropic's partner network, the API side can go much higher: up to $100,000 extra, claimed through the fund, not through this form. The public program is the on-ramp. The VC packet is the real compute grant.

The product is the lock-in

Anthropic framed the expansion as help for founders who can now ship a prototype without a team. That is true, and it is also the strategy. A company that wires Claude on day one will not rip it out when Opus 5.6 ships. Members also get Applied AI office hours, help listing on Claude Marketplace, and seats at Founder House. Marketplace is the interesting one. That is how a five-person shop sits next to Anthropic's own plugins inside Claude.

Beth Robertson, who runs Startups at Anthropic, told Inc the quiet part: an idea that used to need a team and a round can now be built by a founder with a laptop. The lab's own line is colder. Benefits of AI, it says, reach most people through the companies that build on models, not through the models alone. Translate that: Anthropic would rather be the substrate under ten thousand products than the chatbot those products compete with.

What to do with it

If you already burn Claude tokens, apply this week. The Team seats are $100 per Premium seat per month billed annually, so five seats for a year is the $6,000 Anthropic uses in its $7,000 headline. The $1,000 credit is for evals and a first production path, not for a launch. Spend it on instrumentation. The partner discounts only pay if you were going to buy those tools anyway.
