Supabase CLI

Supabase CLI is the official command-line tool for Supabase, the Postgres-based backend platform. It lets developers run a full local copy of the Supabase stack in Docker, write and apply database migrations, generate TypeScript types from a schema, manage storage, deploy Edge Functions, set secrets, and push configuration to hosted projects. It is distributed through npm, Homebrew, Scoop and Linux packages, and the supabase/setup-cli GitHub Action installs it in CI.

Who it is for: developers and teams who keep their database schema in version control and want a repeatable path from a laptop to staging and production. It is also used by AI coding agents that edit migrations and run deploy commands on a developer's behalf.

Key features: - Local development: supabase start brings up Postgres, Auth, Storage and other services locally. - Migrations: create, diff, list and push database migrations; declarative schema workflows are supported. - Type generation: gen types produces typed client definitions from your schema. - Deployment: functions deploy, secrets set and config push manage a hosted project. - Branching: commands to work with preview branches of a hosted project.

Version 3 (released November 2, 2026) made safety the default. Database commands such as db push and db pull target the local stack unless --remote is passed, a single --remote flag replaces --linked, --project-ref and --db-url, and every command that changes a hosted project asks for confirmation with a default of No; unattended runs need --yes. Flags and environment variables now override config.toml in one consistent order, pg-delta became the default schema diff engine, and the [inbucket] config section was renamed [local_smtp]. Teams not ready to move can pin the v2.stable channel, which still receives security fixes.

Pricing type: free and open source. Using it against hosted projects is billed under your Supabase plan.

Alternatives: the Firebase CLI, Neon's CLI, Prisma Migrate, Atlas, Flyway and Liquibase for migrations specifically.
